Sound Cylinders

Sound Cylinders

Objective:  The Sound Cylinders (or boxes) teach the child to discriminate between the subtle differences in sounds.  This is one way to help train the ears for later studies in elocution and music.

Ages:  2 - 4 years

Control of Error:  The containers each have a matching sound.  If the last two containers do not have the same sound there is an error.  Also, the bottom of the cylinders can be marked to show the matches.

Presentation:  Roll out a rug and retrieve the work from the shelf.  Select a container from one group of Sound Cylinders.  Shake it.  In a sequential order, preferably left to right or top to bottom, take one cylinder at a time from the other group and shake it, looking for the matching sound.  When the matching sound is found, place the two cylinders together below the work.  Continue in this manner until all matches have been found.  Return the cylinders to the basket in random order within the two groups so that it is ready for use again.  Return the work to the shelf and roll up the rug.

Creating the Work:
        Materials List:
8 - 12 containers (baby food jars, film canisters, small boxes, toilet paper tubes with paper taped to the ends, two paper cups taped together)
miscellaneous items (rice, beans, pasta, jacks, beads, pennies, etc.)
basket or tray to hold containers
                marker, paint, stickers (optional)
Select eight to twelve containers which are similar, but can be divided easily into two groups.  The containers should be opaque or painted so that the contents cannot be seen.  Divide the available containers into two groups.  If the groups are not already visibly different (as in above picture) paint or otherwise mark the tops of one of the groups so that it is different.  (For example, paint the tops of one set of baby food jars red and the other set blue.)  Place some of the items in one of the jars from each group.  Put different items in the other containers, being certain that there is a matching container in the other group for each sound.  Arrange attractively in the basket.
