Objective: Pouring Works teach a child how to pour liquids
without spilling. They also encourage precision and motor
control. Pouring works typically require cleaning up an
occasional spill, thus encouraging cleanliness and order in the child's
behavior.
Ages: 2 - 4 years
Control of Error: The water will spill if not poured correctly.
Presentation: Select the Pouring Work from the shelf and bring it
to a table. Pick up the full pitcher (it should be on the left)
and pour the contents into the pitcher on the right by carefully
placing the lip of the pitcher in the center of the top of the second
pitcher. Pour the contents back into the first pitcher. You
may want to demonstrate how to clean up a spill by deliberately
spilling a little bit of water while you are pouring. Use the
sponge to clean any dribbles or spills. Wring the sponge over the
pitcher. Return the work to the shelf.
Extension 1: A funnel may also be used.
Extension 2: Use containers of different capacities so that the child must determine when to stop pouring.
Note: Pouring works for very young children generally contain
rice or beans instead of water. When a dry substance is mastered
the child advances to water.
Note 2: Water is much more fun and easier to see when it is
colored. Colored water can be obtained by swirling a washable
marker in the water.
