Objective: The Multiplication Checkerboard allows the child to multiply large numbers.
Ages: 7-11
Control of Error: An answer sheet, calculator or another person may provide the control of error.
Prerequisite: The child
should be very familiar will the process of multiplication on the
Multiplication Board. (Memorization of the multiplication facts
facilitates the process but is not necessary for success.) He
will also need to be able to exchange a two digit number for a ten (or
tens) bar and remaining beads as is practiced in the Snake Game.
Presentation: Roll out a
rug and retrieve the Multiplication Checkerboard work from the shelf.
Select the appropriate math card or other math question.
Place the tiles representing the two factors at the side and
bottom of the checkerboard as shown above. This question asks the
product of 26,874 x 313, so the number 313 is at the side and 26,874 is
placed at the bottom.
