Objective: The
Continent (World) Pin Map
familiarizes the child with the names and shapes of the continents of
the world. It also serves as a tool to increase visual
perception
for pre-reading children by giving them the opportunity to match the
label to the control map by the shapes of the letters.
Ages: 4-7 years
Control of Error: The Control Map provides control of error
and
the last label is unlikely to match the last continent if there has
been a mistake.
Presentation: Roll out a rug to work on. Get the
Continent
Pin Map, labels and Control Map from the shelf. Place the
Control
Map and the labels on the left side of the rug and the pin map on the
right. Select a continent from the Control Map and the
corresponding label. To emphasize that the letters on the
label
and the Control Map are the same you may wish to hold the label close
to the map and check it closely. Place the label's pin
carefully
in the hole on the appropriate continent. Repeat for the
remaining continents. When it is completed, return the labels
to
the label holder and put the maps back on the shelf. Roll up
and
put away the rug.
Extension 1: Complete the exercise without the control map.
Extension 2: Trace and color the map, labeling the continents
or use the Continent Map Worksheet.

Creating the Work:
Material
List:
One copy of the
Continent (World)
Pin Map on cardstock or photo paper.
Foam Board, approximately 7" x 11"
7 pins with white heads
rubber cement
exacto knife
clear packing tape
Cut, laminate and trim the maps. Cut out but do not laminate
the
labels. Mount the Continent Pin Map (the blank copy) onto
foam
board using rubber cement and trim excess with an exacto knife.
Use a pin to put one hole in each continent where the label
will
be placed. Place the labels on a piece of clear packing tape,
leaving about a 1/2" of tape exposed at the beginning of the label.
Place another piece of tape over all but about 1/4" of the
label.
Trim the tape on the sides and end of the label - leave the
front
part of the label with the exposed tape. Wrap the exposed
portion
of the tape around a pin and onto the uncovered portion of the label,
leaving a small space between the pin and the label where the two
pieces of tape are stuck to each other.
