Objective: Color tablets are designed to train the eye and mind
to detect the sometimes subtle differences in colors and their hues.
Color nomenclature can also be taught.
Ages: 2 - 4 years
Control of Error: The last set of cards will not match (matching
game) or the last card will be visually out of order (light/dark game).
The back of the tablets can also be marked to provide control of
error.
Presentation 1: Roll out a rug. Select the first set of
color tablets (two each of red, yellow and blue cards) from the shelf.
Introduce the colors using the Three Period Lesson
and one each of the primary color tablets if the child is unfamiliar
with the color names. Next place one copy of the cards in a line
on the rug. Use the second copy to match the colors, placing the
matching card below, as illustrated in the above picture (except with
only three colors). You may want to say the name of the color as
you place the matching card. When completed, return the color
tablets to the shelf and put away the rug.
Presentation 2: Proceed as above except using all eight color tablets (the second set of color tablets).
Presentation 3: Use the third set of color tablets. Lay
these tablets on the rug showing the progession from lighter to darker
in a given color.
Creating the work:
Print the file on cardstock, trim
and laminate the color tablets. You may also want to mark the
back of the tablets prior to laminating them. For instance, on
set 3 you could put 1 dot on the back of the lightest card, two dots on
the next darkest shade, etc. Numbers, letters, shapes or any
combination thereof could also be used, just be consistent.
