Cards & Counters

Watermelon Cards & Counters

Objective:  Cards and Counters give the child the opportunity to practice numeration from 1 - 9 and teach the concept of odd and even.

Ages: 2- 4 years
Control of Error:  There are just enough counters to complete the work.  If there are not enough counters or extra counters there has been a mistake.

Presentation:  Roll out a rug.  Select the Cards & Counter work from the shelf.  Lay out the cards in numerical order starting from the left.  Make two rows if required.  Lay the counters on or below the cards as necessary.  Pair the counters in twos if the cards are conducive to this layout.  This shows the difference between odds and evens.  Return the counters to the bowl and place the work on the shelf.  Roll up the rug and put it in the rug basket.

Note 1:  The concept of zero is more advanced than the other numbers.  Leave out the zero card until you have introduced the concept of zero.

Note 2:  this work can take on many forms.  The watermelon work shown above is one example of many.  For instance, in February you can put hearts in an envelope and in June you can put shovels in a bucket of sand or shells on a beach.
